How the Ajman Free Zone is driving sustainability in the logistics industry

In the Middle East and around the world, the UAE is seen as a rapidly growing hub for global logistics activities. Its competitive advantage lies in its many strengths as a strategically located country with modern infrastructure and increasing trade volumes.

Logistics companies are naturally drawn to the Gulf State and take advantage of numerous opportunities that also arise from its investor-friendly environment, open market approach and close connection to the global economy, as it serves as a gateway between East and West. Many international logistics companies have chosen the UAE as the headquarters of their regional activities and have set up their facilities in different parts of the country. This makes the logistics industry one of the country’s most important economic drivers.

More recently, the emirates’ steady shift towards sustainable development has accelerated the adoption of the concept of sustainability in the logistics sector. This can be seen in the increase in environmentally friendly warehouses in the country as well as in the continued implementation of globally recognized sustainable practices in the industry.

As a result, environmentally friendly industrial areas have grown in number over the years, which enable logistics companies to operate their facilities with the least possible environmental impact.

In the Ajman Free Zone alone, world-class sustainable warehouses are now serving the needs of today’s local, regional and global logistics companies in the 9,070 square meter green zone. There are 82 multipurpose units and service blocks in this AED 36 million green project.

According to HE Ing. Ali AlSuwaidi, General Director of the Ajman Free Zone, the green zone is an integral part of the overarching initiatives for environmental sustainability in the Ajman Free Zone. The green zone is designed to fully support commercial and industrial activities using environmentally friendly methods and is one of the contributions of the Ajman Free Zone, an advocate for sustainability, to Ajman’s efforts to build a green logistics economy. When designing its sustainable warehouses, the free zone took care to combine the economic, ecological and social inputs and outputs of typical warehouse operations. For this reason, the environmentally friendly facilities are able to handle the regular warehouse operating processes as well as to meet the environmental requirements.

By being equipped with the right technologies to reduce waste, reduce energy costs and improve efficiency, the facilities can help companies save money while meeting their environmental sustainability goals, which has a positive impact on the bottom line. For example, the Ajman Free Zone management is trying to reduce its water consumption. The warehouses have effective waste management solutions, dedicated loading, vehicle parking spaces, e-charging stations with solar energy and an easily available pantry. These are adjacent to the port of Ajman and are connected to the main ports in the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the warehouses are equipped with fire alarms, water sprinklers and 24-hour video surveillance. Within the free zone, logistics companies can use these environmentally friendly facilities to minimize their environmental impact.

ER Eng. AlSuwaidi said sustainable warehouses, which is an important step in the logistics industry, can help Ajman’s transition to a green economy by helping to increase clean energy market share in the country in line with UAE Vision 2021 efforts the Ajman Free Zone in support of the Green Economy Plan, which is one of the five goals of the Ajman Vision 2021, adopted by HH Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman and Chairman of the Ajman Executive Council.

He reaffirmed Free Zone’s commitment to sustainability in the logistics sector and assured that the Ajman Free Zone team will continue to take steps to meet the sustainability requirements of stakeholders and members of the business community – including logistics companies – while maintaining an investor-friendly environment within their remit. These initiatives aim to encourage and encourage green companies to invest in Ajman and the United Arab Emirates, particularly the Ajman Free Zone. The efforts of the free trade area also recognize the all-encompassing role that business played in Ajman’s economic rise.

Sustainability is the way forward for the local logistics industry. Anticipating the demands that come with this trend, the Ajman Free Zone will manage and implement strategically sustainable projects in accordance with the country’s sustainable development goals.
