AIA awards a gold medal to Brooks + Scarpa in 2022 and an Architecture Firm Award to MASS Design Group in 2022
The Board of Directors and the Strategic Council of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have the Gold medal 2022 to Angela Brooks, FAIA, and Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, for their lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. The jurors also selected the MASS Design Group to win the award 2022 AIA Architects’ Office Award, the highest distinction that the AIA bestows on an architecture firm.
The 2022 Gold Medal was awarded to an individual or a couple, Angela Brooks, FAIA, and Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, life and design partners, for their work spanning three decades. “To forge a pioneering architectural brand that deeply enriches the human experience and reveals the extraordinary in what is generally regarded as ordinary,” the duo met while studying architecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville before getting married in 1987. Brooks later attended graduate school at SCI-Arc while Scarpa began working with Gwynne Pugh and founded Pugh + Scarpa in 1991, company renamed Brooks + Scarpa. “Your work has been internationally acclaimed and recognized for its unprecedented intersection of collaboration, community, research and reflection.”
In addition to being outstanding, award-winning design architects, Angie and Larry are also extraordinary activists, community leaders, and civic collaborators [â¦] They are motivated by social and environmental stewardship, looking for ways to improve the quality of life in cities and ennoble the daily lives of their citizens. Active citizen architects, their efforts have fundamentally reshaped public policy initiatives that address critical issues and reforms that serve the public good, increase housing equality, and improve the built environment. – Steve Dumez, FAIA, and Douglas A. Benson, FAIA.

The AIA Architecture Firm Award 2022 was given to the MASS Design Group and honors the company’s outstanding architecture. Founded in 2008, the collective of more than 200 architects, engineers, researchers and even filmmakers has always dealt with the most pressing social issues in the world and demonstrated “that a healthy built environment is critical to supporting communities as they face history, heal, and explore new opportunities for the future“. The team was formed during the design and construction of Butaro District Hospital in Rwanda and evolved into MASS.Made, a furniture design and manufacture team, and MASS.Build, a construction company. Her projects in the United States include the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, and the Traveling Gun Violence Memorial.
I admire MASS ‘commitment to equating justice and beauty in our built environment. Too often we experience the opposite in the architectural profession, where beauty in design is privatized for a select population. […] However, MASS proves through every project that this assumption is neither fair nor empowering. Indeed, her team shows that a mission-driven design process led by the communities themselves is both achievable and necessary. – Rahul Mehrotra, Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
